Listening to the Learners: How Student Engagement Transforms School Design

What happens when the true end users of a school — its students — help shape their learning environment? This session explores a highly interactive engagement process that transforms traditional programming into meaningful, ongoing collaboration. Through a case study of Grace James Academy, an all-girls middle/high school in Jefferson County Public Schools, Kentucky, participants will see how students worked alongside educators and designers to define priorities for collaboration, rigor, and adaptability — directly informing the evolving design.

FF&E is often treated as a late-stage budget decision, yet it fundamentally shapes how students learn. This session reframes FF&E selection as a cohesive, pedagogically driven process that bridges educational vision and procurement realities, integrating furniture specification alongside space design and finish selection. Emphasizing the critical role of stakeholder input and feedback, participants will explore a framework aligning learning goals, space types, and furniture while navigating procurement constraints to deliver intentional, high-impact solutions.

How can a historic building catalyze new ways of learning and collaborating? At the University of Central Missouri, the century-old Humphreys Building was reimagined as a flexible academic hub supporting cross-disciplinary collaboration. Because incoming occupants came from departments with little prior interaction, the design had to build shared culture, not just rehabilitate a structure. This session explores how inclusive engagement uncovered common needs, shaped adaptable learning spaces, and produced strategies now influencing campus-wide standards for student-centered environments.
