Sean McCarty

Deputy Superintendent for Secondary EducationSeneca Valley School District

Dr. Sean McCarty played a central role in the design, development and production of the dynamic new Ehrman Crest Elementary / Middle School, which opened in August 2022, and was later named a 2022 TIME (Global) Best Invention. The building project successfully united the District, CannonDesign architects and the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh in a planned effort to advance bold new opportunities for school design. Dr. McCarty is extremely pleased that Ehrman Crest is now known as a model K-6 facility that demonstrates why physical learning environments play a key role in educational outcomes.

Before transitioning to the role of Deputy Superintendent for Secondary Education in 2025, he held the position of Assistant Superintendent, Grades K-6. In the years he led the District’s elementary team, he oversaw the development and expansion of a very successful elementary foreign language program that is now reaching thousands of children as young as six years of age. He is also credited for introducing and initiating the District's wildly popular Creativity, Innovation & Research Center (CIRC), which also serves as a model program for K-6 schools across the State. Under his guidance, several of the District’s elementary schools earned state and national accolades for Title I Reading, bullying prevention and community service.

Dr. McCarty also has previous experience as the principal of Ryan Gloyer Middle School in the Seneca Valley School District. During his tenure there, the building was recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School, a National Middle School Association Schools to Watch Middle School and a Top 10 Middle School in the Pittsburgh Business Times. He was also recognized by the School Library Journal as a finalist as one of the top ten administrators in the United States for library support. He was also the Seneca Valley Middle School Assistant Principal for three years. During this time frame, the middle school was recognized as a Don Eichhorn Award Winner for a top middle school in the state of Pennsylvania.

This session presents new evidence showing how micro‑level workspace conditions — specifically natural light, views, and task lighting — relate to teachers’ positions within organizational communication networks. Using full‑population sociometric analysis and spatial perception data from a K–6 school, the study demonstrates that workspace affordances significantly predict closeness centrality in advice‑seeking and social networks. Findings highlight how small environmental features influence collaboration, knowledge flow, and organizational resilience, offering a systems‑level model for evidence‑based educational design.
