Trauma-Informed Design within Education

Students do not enter classrooms neutrally. They have been shaped by life experiences. In a community-engaged learning studio between a Knox County school and University of Tennessee’s Interior Architecture studio, undergraduate students spent fifteen weeks reimagining two neurodiverse classrooms. Grounded in trauma-informed design, students recorded behavioral observations, conducted research, and developed design principles using color, materiality, choice, and more. Design proposals and large-scale prototypes demonstrate how design education can meaningfully address rising behavioral needs.

Educational environments are often designed for an “average” learner, yet no such learner exists. This session demonstrates how play-based, biophilic, and neurodiverse-informed design strategies can improve behavior, focus, emotional safety, and well-being. Presenters will share how the Bright Futures Preschool transformed an underutilized building into a flexible, high-performing learning environment. Attendees will explore strategies such as sensory-conscious materials, zoning, daylighting, acoustics, and play-based layouts, and leave with practical frameworks for aligning educational vision with inclusive design execution across early learning, K-12, positioning neurodiversity as a driver of better outcomes for students, staff, and communities.

Whether a school is brand new or in desperate need of repair, the physical environment is an often-overlooked factor that directly impacts school culture and outcomes, especially for students of color and those from low-income communities. Participants will learn to analyze a school’s physical spaces to strengthen culture and support learning goals using a practical framework and real school examples. Attendees will create a walkthrough instrument and action steps for improvement through intentional environment changes.
